For the first time, a female candidate, Ovessa Iqbal from the Ladakh region clear the Civil Services Examination, 2010,

Srinagar, May 12: Despite having failed to qualify the All India Civil Services examination in two earlier attempts, 25-year old Ovessa Iqbal didn’t lose heart and made it to the coveted post in her third attempt to create a history of sorts by becoming the first Muslim girl from Jammu and Kashmir to achieve the feat.

She was not able to clear the IAS examination in her first attempt, she failed to clear the prelims. But in second try she qualified the prelims, but couldn’t make it to the final stage of interview.

“On an average I used to study for 8 to 10 hours a day. Right from the beginning the experience was good and interesting. It was not hectic but at times I used to lose both concentration and motivation, especially after I was dropped in the interview stage in 2009. But somehow I motivated myself and continued my efforts.” She said .

Born in a remote Chushot village of Leh in Ladakh, she did her schooling in her hometown Moravian Mission School Leh and moved to Chandigarh to pursued her engineering from Punjab University Chandigarh in 2007.

.Ovessa iqbal family had always been supportive. Ovessa’s father is a farmer by profession, while her mother, a lecturer, died few years back in a tragic train accident in Hyderabad. Her elder sister is a lecturer at a Srinagar college while her brother has completed his engineering.

Following are the important highlights of the Civil Services Examination, 2010,

- A total number of 5,47,698 candidates applied for this examination, 2,69,036 candidates appeared for the Preliminary examination, which was conducted on May 23, 2010.

- 12,491 candidates qualified for the Main written examination held in October ¡V November, 2010. 2,589 candidates were short listed for the Personality Test conducted in March-April, 2011.

- Finally, 920 candidates (717 male and 203 female) have been recommended for appointment to the IAS, IFS, IPS and other Central Services.

- Of the 920 candidates recommended, 28 are physically challenged candidates ¡V 14 orthopaedically challenged; 5 visually impaired and 9 hearing impaired.

- Ms. Ovessa iqbal, a female candidate, JK’s first Muslim girl to crack All India Civil Services exam, 2010. Meanwhile, Ovessa qualified Kashmir Administrative Services (KAS 2009). She pursued her engineering from Punjab University Chandigarh in 2007. This is her third attempt.
